The Stanley County School District is investing in its future with the approval of a new track and field complex. Construction officially began this spring, and the facility is set to be completed in time for the upcoming football season. The project, developed by Mammoth Construction—renowned for its work across the U.S.—aims to benefit not only the district's athletes but also the wider community.
A New Hub for Community and Sports
The new track and field facility will be a shared resource for the entire Fort Pierre area, with the potential to host statewide events, boosting local tourism and contributing to the area’s economy. Positioned centrally in South Dakota, the complex’s location at Parkview makes it an ideal venue for regional sports, drawing teams from across the state. This will give students and local athletes the opportunity to compete without the strain of long travel times.
"This project has been a long time coming," said Superintendent Dan Baldwin, reflecting on the district’s long-standing need for a new track. "We’ve needed this for years, and now we’re doing it right.”
Addressing Longstanding Issues
The existing facility, which dates back to the 1970s, has seen decades of wear and tear, exacerbated by damage from the 2011 Missouri River Flood. The ground’s hardness and poor drainage have made the field less usable, especially for track events. The district has worked diligently for years to gather information, and finally, through a combination of financial foresight and community support, the project is now underway.
"It's a great day to be a Buffalo. Our coaching staff is so excited about all of the changes happening to the facilities at our school. We hope that this type of upgrade will draw more participation at all levels of our football program. This will certainly help our track team as well. We are looking forward to seeing the finished product." -Head Football Coach Max Foth
"This will be a great addition to the school and community. We have students participating in the Special Olympics, and they have had to go to Pierre to practice for outdoor events. We had our first discussion about the potential of hosting some of those events here in Stanley County as a result of the new complex this week. It's already creating opportunities for our students and families, and it's not even finished! Great things are happening in the Stanley County School District!" Community Support and Economic Impact
The district's strong financial position—bolstered by Capital Outlay and Impact Aid funds—has made this upgrade possible without putting undue strain on the community’s finances. According to Toby Morris of Colliers, the district is well-positioned to continue making facility improvements in the coming years.
The project is expected to have lasting economic benefits for Fort Pierre, with improved infrastructure and a modern sports complex likely to attract events like state track meets, club sports, and other large gatherings. Fort Pierre Development Executive Director Dave Bonde emphasized how these upgrades demonstrate the community’s civic pride and commitment to its youth.
“The new complex will be the first thing travelers see when they come into town, and it will send a message about the progressive nature of our community,” Bonde said. “It’s an investment in the future of Fort Pierre.”
Building Community, One Step at a Time
Beyond athletics, the new complex will also serve as a hub for community wellness. Sunny Hannum from the Fort Pierre Development Corporation highlighted the facility’s potential as a place for residents to walk, jog, and stay healthy. The project is part of a broader vision to improve the downtown area and increase walkability for locals.
With strong community backing and a clear vision for the future, the Stanley County School District’s new track and field complex is poised to become a lasting symbol of growth and pride for Fort Pierre.
