Mrs. Maher's 4th and 5th grade students have been studying the phenomena of flood and drought. They examined data and maps to determine where floods and droughts are most likely and to understand why the 1972 Rapid City flood happened. They analyzed historical temperature and precipitation graphs to comprehend the extremity of the Dust Bowl era. Then they read about engineered solutions that help prevent or control events of excessive or insufficient water. Last week, they were challenged to model a system for removing excess water from the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Their models had to move water from a bucket on the floor to a bucket 3.5 feet off the ground.

Thanks to the Sanford Underground Research Facility for loaning us this amazing curriculum kit.
