In education,
we need to continue
to reflect
on how we prepare
our students
for the future.

Do the habits
that we have developed
in our schools
prepare our students
for the future?

Do the activities
that we implement
promote the skills
that will be required
for a 21st century adult?

Do we emphasize
problem solving
teamwork
writing
research and communication
in our classroom and school activities?
     --Dr. Rick Melmer

SmartBoards are interactive electronic touch-screen white boards
which allow manipulation and annotation by teachers and by students.

Many South Dakota schools are using SmartBoards in their K-16 classrooms.
They report that teachers (even technophobes) and students really like them,
use them daily, and that they even engage disruptive students,
resulting in fewer disciplinary problems.
Studies show that students who are actively engaged in their learning learn better.

SmartBoards come with 5200 professional-quality
ready-made lessons, animations, etc.

Sioux Falls is putting SmartBoards in every classroom!

One teacher in Harrisburg puts key question & problem on SmartBoard
before students arrive
Makes notations on board – saves  and loads into web page
Kids at home can’t remember = refresh

Kadoka has SmartBoards in every K-12 classrooms
– within 2 months every teacher uses it every single day.
Teachers don’t need to be tech savvy
– still use it every day even though teaching traditionally
– instead of open books – went to Keloland and
brought up tornadoes in the state and showing interactive video

Unplug Your USB Devices Carefully
Whenever you unplug a USB device from its connection,
make sure you are careful in doing so.
The best way to unplug a device is by pulling firmly straight out of the connector.
Wiggling the USB connector or pulling from an angle
can cause the plug to bend or can damage (and break) the internal connectors
which make the device work.

6 Ways to Encourage Student Success
1. Be a good role model.
Students learn as much from how you act as they do from what you say.
2. Treat children with respect, and they will take your words and example to heart.
3. Celebrate every child’s success and sincere efforts.
Be generous with your words of praise.
4. Have patience. Accept that children make mistakes, are inconsistent, and act thoughtlessly
—this is part of being a child.
5. Share your enthusiasm for the value of education and the fun of learning.
6. Set high but realistic expectations for students’ work and behavior.
